It all began when WIP.ai co-founder Guilherme Oliveira started his master's internship at a major automotive assembly plant, with the mission of reducing electrical defects on the production line. Working in a fast-paced, highly optimized assembly environment with extremely short cycle times, he quickly realized that the leading cause of electrical defects in the final product—the vehicle itself—was human error. This particular task could not simply be automated with robots, nor could it be improved by repeatedly reminding operators to be more careful when connecting electrical plugs. What was needed was a solution that was robust, technologically advanced, ergonomic, and non-intrusive. That realization led to the development of a Mixed Reality Plug Detection system, created through a collaboration between Guilherme and a team from a leading engineering university. While operators wore a lightweight, ergonomic mixed reality headset, an AI-powered algorithm continuously monitored their work, verifying that every electrical connection was completed correctly and immediately alerting them whenever an error was detected. The result was a significant reduction in defects and a measurable improvement in product quality.
